Engineering an address-to-report workflow that connects property data, zoning rules, and AI-assisted interpretation.

THE CHALLENGE
Where the work started.
A property address is only the beginning. A useful zoning brief needs the correct parcel, applicable regulations, overlays, and exceptions before it can explain what they mean. My work focused on translating those requirements into a connected software product, from data processing through report delivery.

Engineering contributions.
Connect the product from end to end
Developed the interface, backend services, data workflows, and report generation. Connected address input, property context, analysis, and saved reports into a complete user workflow.
Structure the context before the AI step
The pipeline uses PostGIS to resolve property context and loads applicable by-law provisions before AI-assisted interpretation. Typed contracts and explicit stage outputs help keep the handoffs between data, calculations, and explanations consistent.
Separate calculation from explanation
The product combines deterministic rule checks with AI-assisted synthesis. Parking, loading, and related standards are handled through structured rules; the report brings the results together with references so users can follow the basis of the analysis.
Deliver a complete product experience
Integrated account access, credits, saved reports, PDF generation, and API outputs. ZoningPal’s API also supports external product integration, including its use as the zoning-analysis layer in Bloom Hub.
Bring the work into the room
Presented ZoningPal through public demos, including AI Tinkerers Toronto at Shopify’s Toronto office and Innovate Toronto. Used customer discovery and product demonstrations to inform pricing, requirements, and ongoing development.
OUTCOMES
What came out of it.
- Developed a live zoning report product under Stoop Inc., with a paid report flow and downloadable PDF output.
- Connected property context, applicable rules, structured calculations, and AI-assisted explanations in one workflow.
- Supported API integration with Bloom Hub and presented the product at technology and startup events.
